Lines of Research

LP 1 - Nutritional epidemiology, urban health, sociocultural processes and public policies

Currently, nutrition is central to the health agenda. The health / nutrition combination is diffused by a socio-historical-cultural background that shapes food and the urban environment, thus requiring the production of interdisciplinary knowledge and formulation of policies. Frontlines: Study of the magnitude, distribution and determinants of nutritional issues. Research and evaluation of interventions in health / nutrition in the urban context. Food / body / culture analysis using a theoretical / methodological framework for the Sociology and Anthropology of Food; critical reading of obesity, dietary practices, body and eating disorders. Study on the history of public policies, emphasizing food and nutrition; analysis of scope and limits to these policies in a historical and social context; diagnosis, planning, evaluation, and development of impact indicators in food and nutrition policies.

LP 2 - Food science and health

Several interdisciplinary approaches designed to apply the knowledge of food science to target groups. In this context, projects are dedicated to the research of the attributes of nutritional, functional, hygiene-sanitary, physical-chemical, sensorial and legal quality of food. Among the objects of study are: 1) evaluation of the constituents of food, its technological function and its effects on health; 2) identification and quantification of bioactive compounds in foods of Brazilian biodiversity; 3) development of nutritionally improved products; 4) nutritional implications due to preparation techniques and their effects on food composition, nutrient retention and activity; 5) technological and nutritional implications of food formulations with special dietary goals; and 6) analysis of quality control and good practices, proposing strategies to improve food health and safety.

LP 3 - Clinical and experimental nutrition

The use of modern research techniques and technological advances of the modern world has been found to require a special dynamism proposed by the science of nutrition. Eating has been identified as one of the main causal factors in the development of diseases. On the other hand, our diet is extremely important in the treatment of various diseases. This line of research aims to develop studies in Clinical and Experimental Nutrition focusing on the practical implementation of health. The goals of this line of research are: promoting the study and research in the area of Clinical and Experimental Nutrition; providing technical support to health professionals in order to enhance their expertise in the field of Clinical and Experimental Nutrition; studying the clinical-nutritional problems in view of the individual and community health; encouraging different health professionals to take part in an interdisciplinary team aiming at promoting and maintaining health.

Master's Program in Food Science, Nutrition and Health

The Master's Program in Food Science, Nutrition and Health, launched in 2014, aims to train professionals who are capable of working in a multidisciplinary approach to the study of food, diet and nutrition, focusing primarily on the health of individuals or population groups and contributing to the development of strategies and nutrition/public health policies.

Presentation

The program

The trajectory of UNIFESP reflects the commitment of its community to seeking excellence in its teaching, research and extension, in an integrated way after listening to society needs. This leads to the development of professionals and citizens with a solid technical-scientific and humanistic background.

Unifesp has currently 6 campuses offering 27 undergraduate courses. This postgraduate program has 40 Academic Masters and 38 PhDs, of which more than 50% were accredited up to 1984. This scenario contributes to maintain and expand an enabling environment for qualification activities, knowledge production and a dialogue with society, and to the shaping of its role as a higher education institution of global reputation.

The maturation of critical mass in the Food and Nutrition area inside the Health and Society Institute - located in the Baixada Santista Campus and held by an interdisciplinary faculty team - together with many projects fostered by funding agencies resulted, in 2014, in the creation of the Postgraduate Program in Food Science, Nutrition and Health.

Goals

Qualifying professionals who are fit for working in food, diet and nutrition studies in an interdisciplinary way, focusing mainly on the health of individuals or populations, thus contributing to the development of strategies and nutrition and public health policies.

Mission

Promoting scientific development of graduate students from different fields. It aims at training teachers, researchers and highly qualified professionals in an interdisciplinary way in order to develop scientific and technological activities in the field of Nutrition.

Alumni profiles

Our students will be able to produce knowledge and act in an interdisciplinary way in teaching, research and extension, based on ethical principles with scientific qualification in the Food Science, Nutrition and Health interface.

The Campus

Baixada Santista (city of Santos) Campus currently has four units, two of which are used by the Health and Society Institute: One unit located at Av. Ana Costa, 95 (Unit I) and the other unit at Av. Silva Jardim, 136 (Central Unit). Both units have 5 classrooms with computers and Internet access, and the Central Unit has a classroom and a computer lab for postgraduate students; this Unit also includes 2 meeting rooms for up to 8 people.

Research is developed in a set of experimental and non-experimental labs. During the implementation of the Interdisciplinary Program in Health Sciences, a Facilities Center was opened to manage and integrate the different research groups. The launch of this Center favors molding and executing interdisciplinary research proposals, at the same time promoting the reasonable use of resources through the shared use of equipment and technicians. The launch of the Facilities Center is sponsored by different funding agencies (FAPESP, CNPq, CAPES and FINEP).

The Facilities Center includes common usage labs, equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus, and satellite labs, an appropriate structure for our researchers. Therefore, the analysis and procedures applicable to a larger set of projects are gathered in central laboratories, while the specificity of each line of research is handled in satellite laboratories that may be supervised by our professors. It brings them closer to the projects as well as promotes multidisciplinarity, articulates research areas, and improves researchers' performance in different roles. This structure is available to meet the requirements of studies from different fields and of different theoretical and methodological frameworks and allows researchers to perform clinical, epidemiological, and experimental in vitro studies, as well as in biological models. It is easier for volunteers to join group studies and participate in interviews due to the convenient location of campus units and the accessibility features of the buildings.

The Program has an administrative area, classrooms, 120-seat amphitheater, a computer lab with 19 computers and research laboratories, and the library.
